    4) JISKA KOI NAHIN……..LAAWARIS 1981:

Jiskaa koee naheen uskaa to khudaa hain yaaro
My friends, God belongs to those who have no one.
mai naheen kahtaa kitaabon mein likhaa hain yaaro
It’s not just me saying this; it’s written in books, my friends.

Jiskaa koee naheen uskaa to khudaa hain yaaro
My friends, God belongs to those who have no one.

Jisne paidaa kiyaa duniyaan mein wahee paalegaa
He who brought you into this world will take care of us,
Hum ko har mod pe, har zulm se bacha legaa
will save us from misfortunes at every turn in the road.
Apne bando se kahaa, kab wo judaa hain yaaro
He told this to his servants; when does he ever forsake them, my friends?

Jiskaa koee naheen uskaa to khudaa hain yaaro
My friends, God belongs to those who have no one.

Zulm insaan kaa jab had se gujar jaataa hai
When the atrocities of man surpass all limits,
Wo kisee aaur hee soorat mein paas aataa hai
he comes to them under some other guise.
Anaginat rup mein wo hum se milaa hain yaaro
He has met with us in countless forms, my friends.

Jiskaa koee naheen uskaa to khudaa hain yaaro
My friends, God belongs to those who have no one.

He is popularly known as Manna Dey, but his name at birth was recorded as Prabodh Chandra Dey. He was born on May 1st 1919. That makes him 90 this May 1st. Manna Dey was a flawless singer and a master of semi-classical geets. The reason why Manna, didn’t scale the heights he deserved was because of his voice which didn’t seem to suit young heroes. Also another point to be looked at, was at the time there was so many a competitions in the company of Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, and the flamboyant Kishore Kumar. Mannaji as he is tenderly known, still kept his place with the greatest and create a niche for himself and he was undoubtfully one of the most accomplished singers of the Indian film industry.

Our lens will focus on this wonderful son of the soil, who has thrilled us many a times, with so many wonderful soul searching tunes.

In looking and researching information on Manna Dey, we will spin some of his songs, maybe about 25 or so that were so memorable in its days.

When Raj Kapoor had to sing a song with classical nuances Manna Dey had to do the job and how competently he did is evident from *laga Chunri Mein Daag from DIL HI TO HAI, and Chalat Musafir Moh liya re from TEESRI KASAM. Within the domains of classical nuances these songs have a sense of mischief written all over them.

My friends, sit back and lets traverse down memory lane with Manna Dey.

*In rating Manna Dey songs I will have to place this one at the top.

Lata Mangeshkar has given the music world so many gems for all these years, gems that will forever be remembered. She stands supreme as a singer in her days which span so many decades, whils’t others marvelled at the Mangeshkar Magic.

Today the majority of female singers who sing in hindi films have Lata as their idol. All of them look at her for inspiration.

Would we ever have someone of Lataji’s calibre again? I doubt wether.

    24) MERE MEHBOOB TUJHAY……….MERE MEHBOOB 1963:

Mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbt ki kasam
My beloved, I beseech you in the name of my love for you
Phir mujhe nargisi ankhon ka sahara dede
Once again, give me the support of these Iris-like eyes
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

    Mere mehboob tujhe
    My beloved ..

Ae mere khwab ki taabir meri jaan-e-ghazal
You who are the realization of my dreams, the soul of my poetry
Zindagi meri tujhe yaad kiye jaati hai
My existence (life) keeps remembering you
Raat din mujhko satata hai tasavur tera
Day and night I am tormented by the thought of you
Dil ki dhadkan tujhe awaaz diye jaati hai
My heartbeat keeps calling out to you
Aa mujhe apni sadaon ka sahara dede
Come strengthen me with your voice calling out to me
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazzara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

    Mere mehboob tujhe
    My beloved ..

Bhool sakti nahin ankhen woh suhana manzar
My eyes can not forget that lovely sight
Jab tera husn mere ishq se takraya tha
When your beauty, accidently met with my adoration
Aur phir raha mein bikhre the hazaron naghme
Around us swelled thousands of melodies
Meri woh naghme teri awaaz ko de aaya tha
I had bestowed those melodies of mine to your voice
Saz-e-dil ko unhi geeton ka sahara dede
Play those songs on the lyrics of my heart
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

    Mere mehboob tujhe
    My beloved ..

Yaad hai mujhko meri umr ki pehli woh gadi
I remember the very first moment of my life
Teri ankhon se koi jaam piya tha maine
When I became intoxicated looking at your beautiful eyes
Mere rug rug mein koi barqse lehrai thi
Lightening struck through every part of my being
Jab tere marmari haathon ko chua tha maine
When I hesitantly touched your fair hands
Aa mujhe phir unhi haathon ka sahara dede
Give me once again the support of those fair hands
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

    Mere mehboob tujhe
    My beloved ..

Maine ik baar teri ek jhalak dekhi hai
Once I saw you for a brief moment
Meri hasrat hai ke mein phir tera deedar karoon
I long to see you once again in front of my eyes
Tere saaye ko samajh kar mein haseen Taj Mahal
Your shadow I will treat as the Beautiful Taj
Chandni raat me nazaronse tujhe pyar karoon
And in moonlit night I will love you with my eyes
Apni mehki hui zulfon ka sahara dede
Give me the gift of your fragrant tresses
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

    Mere mehboob tujhe
    My beloved ..

Dhoond tha hoon tujhe har raah mei har mehfil mein
I seek you in every path, in every gathering
Thak gaye hai meri majboor tamanna ki kadam
Weary now is my helpless unfulfilled desire
Aaj ka din meri umeed ki hai aakhri din
Today is the last day of my hopes
Kal na jaane mei kahan aur kahan tu hai sanam
Tomorrow who knows where we will be, my love
Do ghadi apni nigahon ka sahara dede
For a brief moment support me with your gaze
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

    Mere mehboob tujhe
    My beloved ..

Saamne aa ke zara parda utha de rukh se
Appear in front of me and unveil yourself
    Ik yahi mera ilaaj-e-ghum-e-tanhai hai
Only this is the way to treat the sickness of my loneliness
Teri furqat ne pareshaan kiya hai mujhko
    Your separation torments me constantly
Ab to milja ke meri jaan pe ban aayi hai
Oh come to me for this is now my life and death issue
Dil ko bhooli hui yaadon ka sahara dede
Shore up my heart with the forgotten memories
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede
Bring back to me the beautiful outlook that was lost

    Mere mehboob tujhe
    My beloved ..

Mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbt ki kasam(repeat)
My beloved, I beseech you in the name of my love for you
Phir mujhe nargisi ankhon ka sahara dede
Once again, give me the support of these Iris like eyes
Mera khoya hua rangeen nazara dede

    23) AY MERE DILAY NADAAN…………TOWER HOUSE 1962

(Aye mere dil-e-nadan tu gham se na ghabarana)2
O my innocent heart, don’t be afraid of sorrow
Ik din to samajh legi duniya tera afsaana
One day this world will understand your side of the story
Aye mere dil-e-nadan tu gham se na ghabarana
O my innocent heart, don’t be afraid of sorrow

Armaan bhare dil mein zakhmon ko jagah de de
in your heart, with aspirations make room for the wounds
Bhadke hue sholon ko kuch aur hawa dede
when something is already burning, what if one adds a little fuel to the fire
(life is already rough, what is the difference if more hurt is piled on)

Banti hai to ban jaaye yeh zindagi afsaana
So what if my life remains in this world as a story
(when people die only stories remain behind)

Aye mere dil-e-nadan tu gham se na ghabarana
O my innocent heart, don’t be afraid of sorrow

Fariyad se kya haasil rone se natija kya
What is the use of complaining and crying?
Bekaar hai yeh baatein in baaton se hoga kya
crying and complaining is useless, nothing will change
Apna bhi ghadi bhar mein ban jaata hai begaana

And the moonlight is not lighting up your path
maili na ho dhundhali pade na
Don’t let anything cloud your focus towards your destination
    dekh nazar ki chaandani
Don’t let the darkness of obstacles cloud your sight
(daale hue hai, raat ki chaadar )2
The night has fallen like the sheet of darkness
    sitaaron ki manzil raahi
over your destination, so beautiful as the stars o, traveller

    bahaaron ki manzil raahi)2
A destination as beautiful as the spring, o traveller

    21) TERE RAHON MEIN KHADI……….CHHALIA 1961

(Terii raahon mein khade hain dil thaam ke haay
I am standing on the road that you travel, with my heart in my hands
ham hain diivaane tere naam ke)2
I am crazy about you (your name)
merii ankhiyon ke nuur mere dil ke suruur
The light of my eyes, and intoxication of my heart
chaahe raho duur duur tujhe paanaa hai zuruur
Even if you stay away from me, i will make you mine for sure

Terii raahon mein khade hain dil thaam ke haay
I am standing on the road that you travel, with my heart in my hands
ham hain diivaane tere naam ke
I am crazy about you (your name)

    (baadal barase duniyaa jaane)3
When it rains, the world knows
    ankhiyaan barasen ko_ii na jaane
but when the eyes cry, no one knows
dil kii lagii ko dil hii jaane
the pain or attachmant of the heart only the heart knows.

Raahon mein khade hain dil thaam ke haay
I am standing on the road that you travel, with my heart in my hands
ham hain diivaane tere naam ke)2
I am crazy about you (your name)
merii ankhiyon ke nuur mere dil ke suruur
The light of my eyes, and intoxication of my heart
chaahe raho duur duur tujhe paanaa hai zuruur
Even if you stay away from me, i will make you mine for sure

    Tere Raahon mein……

(kis chhaliyaa pe ye dil aayaa)3
Why did I throw my love on a disloyal person
    patthar se shiishaa Takaraayaa
Like a stone comes in contact with a mirror(result is a broken mirror)
na vo apanaa na vo paraayaa
This person cannot be called mine or considered a total stranger

Raahon mein khade hain dil thaam ke haay
I am standing on the road that you travel, with my heart in my hands
ham hain diivaane tere naam ke
I am crazy about you (your name)
merii ankhiyon ke nuur mere dil ke suruur
The light of my eyes, and intoxication of my heart
chaahe raho duur duur tujhe paanaa hai zuruur
Even if you stay away from me, i will make you mine for sure

    Tere Raahon mein…
