Gosh, I'm no rehnuma [leader], just an ordinary person. But, I liked your suggestion. Thanks for your kind words of admiration.

The urdu poetry has the beauty to express very-very subtle human emotions. Even a complaint of a ditched lover, who can't bear the complete denial of his existance by his beloved, can be worded so delicately that the beloved will feel touched as though by a feather.

    Here is the couplet:

ay cashm-e-yaar, ab na tagaaful, na iltifaat

kya mein kisee sulook ke, kaabil naheen raha

[Note: c in cashm be read as 'ch' in champion]

cashm = sight, yaar = dearest one, tagaaful = naaraaz, angry

iltifaat = invigourating, adding spice [to life], cheering and such like. The word is plural of lutf meaning taste, relishing

Sir Iqbal ever, remained too hard to me to be understand, due to his comand over persian language.

I have tried to read his Kalam-e-iqbal, Shikawa, Jawab-e-Shikwa, Zarb-e- kalim ,but always remained fail to digest.

Anyhow his poem “Tarana-e-Hind ” from BANG-E-DARA, “saare jahaan se achchha, hindustaan hamara” and few more are exceptionable.

So I will not comment on this post.

You're right about that. The nazm denounces the bhautik-vaad of the west. Personally, I favor bhautikvaad.

There are a few things about Iqbal that might be of interest to you and other members of this forum.

    1. Iqbal was a nationalist that's when he wrote some of the masterpieces of his work like tarana-e-Hind and other poems. Three couplets from his nazm [perhaps called "Bharati"] are produced below which I like most.

    2. Iqbal turned a pan-Islamist and modified Tarana-e-Hind to read turn it into a song of muslims. E.g. the line “Hindi hein hamwatan hein, Hindostan hamaara” became “Muslim hein hamwatan hein, sara jahan hamaara”.

    3. Iqbal wrote in Faarsee too. His articles and poems in Faarsee, about Islam and muslims only, are part of syllabus in Iran even today. Interestingly, he is called Iqbal “Lahuri” in Iran.

    4. Iqbal suggested the name Pakistan to the part of British India that went to muslims; and,

    5. Before his death, Iqbal rued, “Writing Taran-e-Hind was the worst thing I did in my life” [or words to that effect].

sham-e-mehfil ho ke too jab soz se qhaalee rahaa

tere parvaane bhee is lazzat se begaane rahe

    [sham-e-mehfil= object of interest/attention.

    soz = passion]

rishta-e-ulfat mein jab in ko piro sakta tha too

phir pareshan kyoon teri tasbeeh ke daane rahe

    [rishta-e-ulfat = bond of attachment/affection

Tasbeeh ke daane = jap-maalaa ke daane, the beads of Rosary]

Thanks for sharing, but what I said that Sir Iqbal is hard for me to be understand.

To read him is just like to read dictionary. He was philosopher and I am simple / common person.

So I like other poet than Shair-E–Mashriq, ALLAMA IQBAL [= poet of east, scholar Iqbal].

One nice nazam from Mahendra Singh Bedi

    aaye hain samajhaane log
    hain kitane deewaane log

    dair-o-haram men chain jo milataa
    kyon jaate maiKhaane log

jaan ke sab kuchh, kuchh bhi na jaane
    hain kitane anjaane log

vaqt pe kaam nahin aate hain
    ye jaane pahachaane log

ab jab mujh ko hosh nahin hai
    aaye hain samajhaane log

Hello folks, this is no ghazal but rubaaee and might remind you of Omar Khaiyyam's rubaaeeyaat:

veise to priye tum itnee sundar ho

    ro'ogee to bhee phool khilaogee

    baadal ko alakon mein bharamaogee

    kaajal ko palakon pe tarasaogee

    bharamaana-tarasaana par THeek naheen

bijliyan kaundh uTHatee hein kabhee kaheen

phir bhee na kintu maane man, to itna karna

ugate candaa se ankhen ulajha kar

    aancal khisakaana aur alsaa jaana

The road to the well is much too difficult,
How to get my pot filled?
When I went to fill the water,
In the furore, I broke my pot.
Khusro has given his whole life to you, O Nizam.
Would you please take care of my veil (of self respect),
The road to the well is much too difficult.
