The music as wel as the lyrics are so so beautiful.... another of the category is 'Chouduvi ka chaand'

chaudavii.n kaa chaa.nd ho, yaa aafataab ho
jo bhii ho tum khudaa ki qasam, laajavaab ho

zulfe.n hai.n jaise kaa.Ndho pe baadal jhuke hue
aa.Nkhe.n hai.n jaise may ke payaale bhare hue
mastii hai jisame pyaar kii tum, vo sharaab ho
chaudavii.n kaa ...

cheharaa hai jaise jhiil me khilataa huaa ka.nval
yaa zi.ndagii ke saaj pe chhe.Dii huii gazal
jaane bahaar tum kisii shaayar kaa Kvaab ho
chaudavii.n kaa ...

hoTho.n pe khelatii hai.n tabassum kii bijaliyaa.N
sajde tumhaarii raah me.n karatii hai.n kaikashaa.n
duniyaa-e-husn-o-ishq kaa tum hii shabaab ho
chaudavii.n kaa ...

That is another song that excels in every way...music, lyrics, singing .....Oh! Too good! When we were is college me and my best friend used to say for fun 'kaash hamare baare mein bhi koi aaise geet gate...' Big Smile

Loverji, these are gems and classics, songs that immortalised Rafisaab, he has gone (as we all will someday) but he certainly has leave an indelible mark for fans throughout the world.

Others like Mohd Azeez, Vipin Sachdeva, Debashish Das Gupta, Bankin Pathak,  Shabbir Kumar, and (likable) Sonu Nigam tried their best............but then the Ustad is most notable.......Rafi will always be Rafi, we will always crave for his recordings.

Have these listed in the "Memories of Mohd Rafi" thread, with audio and translations for the enjoyment of all fans.

Oh he was a genious - Hrishikeshji. I'v seen his  "Sadma" (1983), "Khubsoorat" (1980), "Gol Maal" (1979), "Chupke Chupke" (1975), "Mili" (1975), "Namak Haraam" (1973), "Abhimaan" (1973), "Bawarchi" (1972), "Guddi" (1971), "Anand" (1970), "Anupama" (1966), "Anari" (1959). And sadma, khubsoorat, golmaal, chupke chupke, mili, abhimaan, guddy and anand are beyond comparison. And i think Anupama has quite a few great songs too... Sadma is a remake. Original was in Tamil....(or is it the other way round???) Im not sure... As a matter of fact all his films have good songs.... Lekin Abhiman, Anand aur guddi ka to jawab nahi!!! Lovely songs!

(37) CHOD GAYE BALAM MERA PYAR......BARSAAT 1949
http://66.45.233.12/ChhodGayeBalam.mp3

Singer:........Mukesh/Lata Mangeshkar
Musician:......Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics:........Hasrat Jaipuri
Year:..........1949

Mukesh:
chhod gaye baalam mujhe haai akela chod gaye
my beloved has deserted me, woe, left me all alone
tod gaye baalam mera pyar bhara dil tod gaye
my beloved has broken my loving heart

Lata:
chhod gaye baalam mujhe haai akela chod gaye
my beloved has deserted me, woe, left me all alone
chhut gaya baalam haai saath hamara chhut gaya
lost is my beloved, woe, lost is our togetherness
ruuth gaya baalam mera pyar bhara dil tuut gaya
not talking to me, my beloved, my loving heart has been broken

Lata:
phool sang muskaye kaliyan main kaise muskaaub
with flowery smile of the flower buds, how can I smile
baadal dekh ke bhar aayi ankhiyan - 2
I saw the rain clouds and my eyes brimmed
cham cham neer bahaaun main cham cham neer bahaaun
cham cham my tear drops flow, cham cham my tear drops flow
chhut gaya baalam gaai saath hamara chhut gaya
lost is my beloved, woe, lost is our togetherness
ruuth gaya baalam mera pyar bhara dil tuut gaya
not talking to me, my beloved, my loving heart has been broken

Mulesh:
dil ki lagi ko kya koi jaane main jaanu dil jaane
the pain of my heart who can know, I know and my heart knows
(palkon ke chaya mein naache)2
dancing under my eyelashes
dard bhare afsaanse haai dard bhare afsaane
tales of grief, woe, tales of grief
chhod gaye baalam mujhe haai akela chod gaye
my beloved has deserted me, woe, left me all alone
tod gaye baalam mera pyar bhara dil tod gaye
my beloved has broken my loving heart

Lata:
pehle mann mein aag lagi aur phir barsi barsaat
first a fire raged in my heart then came the downpour
(aaisi chali birhaah ki aandhi)2
such was the windstorm of separation
tadpat hu din raat haai main tadpat hu din raat
that I am in agony day and night, I am in agony day and night
chhut gaya baalam gaai saath hamara chhut gaya
lost is my beloved, woe, lost is our togetherness

Mukesh:
chhod gaye baalam mujhe haai akela chod ga
my beloved has deserted me, woe, left me all alone

Trans:Saeed

A heart breaking one reflecting the parting of true loves

Whenever duets are being sung and listened to, this would certainly comes to mind; Lataji when she was a teenager, Mukesh very young, the movie was a mega hit during its days, "Barsaat" evoked so much memories whenever it is mentioned; the song even today could be regarded as hummable hit.
The soothing voices of Mukesh and Lataji enacted by Raj Kapoor and Nargis blended so superbly in this tune, it can be reffered to as one of the best duets ever. How can we not include this one in memory lane?

Aha, I could not agree with you more as we stayed with the concept and ignored the literal meanings, for example

chaahe dvaar hriday ke band karo
No matter if you close the doors to your heart

... worked well enough but someone later mentioned that he could follow most of the hindi but there were holes in his knowledge of the language which the translated text filled. Thus the question begs should we stay in step with the hindi text - try to translate in chunks so that literal meanings too become apparent. I guess I am a bit boring.

Personally I like the way that the text kept flowing and understandable rather than precise and  trying to figure out....what really the lyricist wanted to say.  To be precise it will be less understandable; to be flowing and continuous will be understandable but not not precise.Hence like you said, translations take away the beauty.........totally agreed.

Sometimes we have to give in to people like "myself" that does not understand the language, and translation plays a great part in giving me that insight.

Loverji, in order to make millions understand some of  the beauty of the romantical language hindi/urdu we must continue to keep the translation flowing and continous rather the precise to the text it is too badSad, but it is the only way to keep the language alive.Big Smile

I definately take your point that the trans take away the beauty of the songs.

Give the kids time, and you will not able to feed them enough old music, was at that stage once. No one could have mention to me K L Saigal, KC Dey, Pankaj Mallik, Shamshad Begum, Noor Jehan, Geeta Roy/Dutt, Hemant Kumar, so much more I cannot even remember.

It is a joy to discuss old song with someone as knowledgeable as you loverji.

Im so sorry Abdoolji. Inspite of trying i'm unable to translate it...first of all Im not at all good at translating...be it English Hindi or my mother tongue thats involved. And then, like i said earlier, I cant do justice to the original version. some of the translations in here makes me laugh....I dont want anyone to do the same on my translationBig Smile.

I can never translate anything, too bad I have to depend on friends for all my translations; despite at times I feel like editing a few words.

There is a couple of Classics by Manna Day and others, maybe my next post, we will go further down memory lane with some classics like

(1) Albeli naar pritham dwaare

(2) Laga Chuniri ne daag

(3) Cham Cham Baje re Payal

(4) Kaun aaya meri man ki dwar..paayal ki

(5) Phool Ghendava na maro

(6) Poocho na kaise man

(7) Ek Chaturnaar karke singhaar

(8) Tere Aakhon ka Siva

Ah! 'Poocho na kaise' is a masterpiece! It is in my favourite raga - 'aahir bhairav'. There is a not-so-famous number in the same raga by yesudas....i'v forgotten the song now....it is there in the collection which i told u i bought recently. But anyway, 'poocho na' is incomparable....
